Meeting Notes ~ October 1st
- Intros – always awesome to meet new ppl :D
- Circle/grounding – this was new for this semester. You do not have to participate if you feel uncomfortable, it’s totally fine. If you also have any questions about the grounding circle, just write them down and bring them to the next meeting
- Pagan Pride!!!
Pagan Pride is coming up! It is on Sunday, October 21st, and this year it is in Long Beach!
The location is:
Rainbow Lagoon Park.
East Shoreline Drive (near Pine Ave.)
Long Beach, CA. 90802.
(Across from Shoreline Village Dr.)
We will have an information table and will also be taking donations for the club
We will work out more details the closer we get to the date
Tons of information about pride can be found here: http://www.paganpridela.org/future/ppd.html
- Samhain! (Sam-hane, usual pronunciation)
We are thinking about having a party on Friday, October 26th
Our ritual will be on Monday, October 29th, instead of our meeting that day (this day is also a full moon, so maybe we include something for that as well???)
Again, more details will come as we get closer
Basic information for Samhain: http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/samhainoctober31/a/About_Samhain.htm
- LA city college lecture – November 2nd
Lecture on “Political Geography of Post-War Bosnia," part of focus will be on religion and religious tolerance due to friction and violence between different religious and ethnic groups
Website is: http://www.lageographic.org/lectures2.html
- Brief discussion on history of paganism, which then changed into a history of cults and religion
There are tons of books out there (including in our own library!) on pre-Christian Europe
One book with good reviews, though it should be taken with a grain of salt, is A History of Pagan Europe by Prudence Jones. The history of most of pre-Christian Europe is pretty good, with some of the Eastern Europe bits being a bit ify, and the focus on modern paganism seems to be on a feminist lean, but it seems well researched.
I found some good information of the history of paganism in Britain on the BBC website (which is so awesome). http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/paganism/
I mentioned the “cult evaluation” when we were discussing high pressure groups
Here is the evaluation tool http://www.neopagan.net/ABCDEF.html
And here is information on Isaac Bonewits in case you want to read more about him (he was a cool dude) http://www.neopagan.net/IB_Intro.html
- Charm discussion
What is a charm? How do you make one?
Charm making ideas? What do you want to make charms out of for our next meeting? (Possible FB discussion?)
Possibility of making charms to sell as a fundraising idea?
- Spiritual Happenings
That's all for now! Have a good week!
